After we bought the red 1978 Firebird, I continued the Mustang search. I sent many ads to the person who asked me to find the car for him and we made several discussions regarding the differences between the model years, body styles and versions. There were too many cars on the market to choose from and we had to look for something more specific. So we moved forward and concentrated on pre-1970 Mustangs and the convertible versions were still preferred.
Soon I came upon a nice 1967 Mustang GT convertible and organized an inspection of it. The car was beautiful, but the bodywork was far from perfect. We continued the search and shrunk the list additionally – only 1969 or 1970 model years. And now the task turned into a real challenge. Those of you who know well the Mustangs are aware that only 11 307 convertibles were built in 1969 and the next year they were even less – only 7673. As a comparison in 1967, 38 751 Mustang drop tops rolled off the assembly line.
We missed a nice red 1970 cvt which sold just few days after it was advertised. After another conversation with the future owner I managed to convince him that the fastback body style is a better idea, because it allows to get a performance version of the model and it is also more popular. He agreed and I continued the search with the new requirements. A week later I came upon this beautiful 1969 Mach 1 which was advertised by a classic car dealer in Baltimore, Maryland area. I have a friend there, but since he was not a car guy and the car was expensive, I organized an inspection by a professional. The condition report was positive. It was a fully restored car with the original matching numbers big block 390 engine and Marti report. This is my favorite model year of Mustang and I was excited when the man said that he wants the car I found. A big problem turned to be the dealer with whom the negotiations and the experience from the deal were very unpleasant. At one point I got mad and was ready to start searching for another car, but the future owner really liked this car, so we bought it. The Mustang arrived together with the red Firebird Formula in October 2019. When I saw it in person, I figured out that from the all cars I have imported so far, it probably was my personal favorite.
